IE Tabs are disappearing

Complaint:

IT Tabs keep disappearing. Each morning only had one tab that was set to http://www.fresnounified.org/pages/default.aspx

Resolution:

  • Verified user was saving tabs correctly. Closed IE
  • Issued command: GPupdate / Force
  • Reopened IE and tabs had disappeared.
  • Issued command: gpresult /H c:\pathfilename.html
  • Opened above file
  • Search for fresnounified.org
    • Page was being set by local policy.

Solution:

  • Remove local policy
    • MMC | group Policy Wizard (local computer object) | user configuration | windows settings | internet explorer maintenance | urls

Rename lots of files at the same time.

Have you ever wanted to rename many files at the same time, without writing script or running to DOS to remember the old commands?
Problem: I had 81 files with a similar name such as this example 10_09%06.gif, the Percent sign is a reserved character. Ever wonder how that happened in the first place….another story.
  1. Open Windows Explorer. Select all the files you want to rename.
  2. Once selected, press the function key "F2".
  3. Type your new name. If you have file extensions shown, make sure you also type the name of the file extension you're renaming.
  4. To Easy!

Remote Desktop Connection

Problem:
I have a MS Server 2003 RS Enterprise X64 Edition running SP 2
When I connect, I get a login dialog box, then a blank blue screen. No icons, no start button….get the idea? Nothing! J
Then I create a second connection, and it works as expected.

Solution:
1    Create both connections. 1 working, 1 failing.
2    Disconnect from the failing connection
3    Open Terminal Services Manager on working connection
4    Right click the instance in disconnected status, and choose login
